The first chapter of the dystopian science fiction novel “Never Let Me Go” from 2005 is written by Kazuo Ishiguro and takes place in the late 1990s in London. The Story is written from the point of view of Katy H from Hailsham the main character.

At first, the 31-year-old carer Katy mentions her donors and that she has to be a carer for another eight months so that she will be a carer for twelve years in total. She continues with stories from her career as a carer and talks about the donors she can remember and she has taken care of them. For example, she tells about the donor Ruth, which was also a student in Hailsham with her. Furthermore, she talks about her memories about her childhood to another donor so that he can endure his pains. Next, while she is driving around the country she sees a sports pavilion and tells the reader one memory in which her friend group is looking down to the North Playing Field where some boys are playing football while making fun of Tommy. Even though Tommy is the best player he is selected at last. Tommy couldn’t handle the situation and gets a tantrum. After the boys went away and the time is slowly running out the girls group with Katy went to the main building, Katy reports. Katy continues her story of that memory that she went to Tommy to stop him because he got mud on his new shirt. The chapter and the memory from Katy ends with Tommy hitting her by accident.

All in all the reader gets to know some background information about Katy’s life and then she starts with a story about her childhood where we hear from Tommy and Ruth the first time and also get to know the character constellation.
